These are movies that really stood out for me -- ones I'd put in my Hall of Fame. Also be sure to check out all 4-star, 4½-star, and 5-star movies.

April 2005 addition:
The Matrix

1999
Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving
Directed by Andy Wachowski, Larry Wachowski

Rarely does a genre-defining movie come along like this one. An incredible cyberpunk, kung fu, action-adventure. I was lucky enough to see this one for the first time completely cold, so on the rare chance you haven't seen this yet I'll do the same for you. This one brought me back to the theater again and again.

March 2005 addition:
Le Roi de coeur (King of Hearts)

1966
Starring Alan Bates, Geneviève Bujold
Directed by Philippe de Broca

When insane asylum inmates are the only ones left in a small French town during World War I, a Private encounters them while on a mission to disarm a bomb. While trying to convince them of the danger they're in, he develops friendships and insights into the human condition, particularly why makers of bombs and wars are considered more sane than these inmates.

Being There

1979
Starring Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine , Melvyn Douglas, Jack Warden
Directed by Hal Ashby

A wonderful, poignant story of a simple-minded gardener who is suddenly on his own after his wealthy employer dies. His only knowledge of the outside world is what he's learned from watching TV. Soon he is befriended by a woman and her husband, a wealthy businessman and advisor to the President. Like another great film, Le Roi de coeur (King of Hearts), you soon begin wondering just who the "sane" people in this world really are.
